AUTHOR, SON OF IWO JIMA FLAG-RAISER, JAMES BRADLEY SPEAKS AT WESTCHESTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE ON APRIL 21James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers and the son of one of the flag-raisers on Iwo Jima, will speak at Westchester Community College on Wednesday, April 21 at 10:00 a.m. The presentation in Classroom Building, Room 200 is free and open to the public.Bradley’s father was John "Doc" Bradley, one of six soldiers who raised the American flag on Iwo Jima. The photograph of this occurrence is the most reproduced in history. Bradley’s Flags of Our Fathers was a New York Times #1 bestseller in 2000. In 1945, U.S. Marines battled to the peak of the island of Iwo Jima. After overcoming gunfire, six of the men raised a flag and that became one of the most famous moments in American military history. Bradley’s book captured the drama of that scene and the legacy of the men who raised the flag at Iwo Jima. To his family, John Bradley never spoke of the incident. But after his death, his family discovered boxes of letters, photos, and documents. His son drew on this material to retrace the lives of his father and the men of his Company.
